With the new contract with Waste Management, starting in 2026 there will be a few changes to our garbage and recycling program. There are no changes to the the weekly collection schedule.
1. After almost 10 years of benefiting from low rates locked in by Waste Management and previous contractor Advance Disposal, costs did increase. Monthly charges are now $12 per month for each garbage cart and $6 per month for each recycling cart. This charge will be effective January 1 and will show up on your February bill.
2. Customer service requests should be directed to Waste Management first by calling 715-502-3565. This includes missed collections and repairs of carts.
3. Bulk Items can be picked up curbside by Waste Management for a fee by calling 1-888-960-0008. This fee needs to be paid over the phone at the time of scheduling the pickup. A fee schedule will be posted on our Village Website.
4. In order to keep costs as low as possible, all commercial dumpster service has been removed from the Village contract. If you have a dumpster that was being billed through the Village, Waste Management will be contacting you to talk about options. You can contract with them or the company of your choice.
5. Again, in order to keep costs low, the large dumpster at the Public Works Shop will no longer be available to the public. Under the new contract, Waste Management charges the Village $275 per pickup and $75 per ton collected in the large dumpster. Due to the pickup fee, this rate is higher than what Waste Management would charge residents at the transfer station in Marshfield. The transfer station is located at 501 S Hume Ave in Marshfield and is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Mondays and from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Tuesdays through Fridays. Questions can be directed to Waste Management at 715-502-3565.
6. To accommodate people who don’t have the ability to transport waste to Marshfield, or hire a hauler on their own, the Village will have one or two (depending on need) bulk collection events per year. The details for these events are still being sorted out.
7. First Choice here in Spencer, 715-659-4340, is still a great recycling resource for appliances, metal, cans, and some electronics. Local resident Brad Welch, 715-660-9736, will also pick up electronics, metals and other recyclable items for a low or no fee. We will post a list of other electronics recyclers on our Village Website.
If you have questions about these changes, please call us in the office at 715-659-5423.
